About.

The U.S. Disaster Preparedness Institute (USDPI) has been serving our nation since 1999.  The mission of USDPI is threefold: to inform, to protect, and to encourage responsible preparedness.

Established in 1999

The U.S. Disaster Preparedness Institute was founded by Kevin Briggs out of his concerns regarding the lack of preparedness of the American public for disasters of all types, particularly nuclear and biological crises.  Kevin is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and served as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force where he led teams that studied nuclear warfare risks and provided nuclear scenario and modeling services to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for many years. He later served as the President of the American Civil Defense Association and the Editor of the Journal of Civil Defense. He then served as the Readiness Division Director at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) where he led many programs, such as the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the National Warning System (NAWAS), and the FEMA National Radio System (FNARS). He conceived and obtained Presidential and Congressional approvals to initiate and develop FEMA's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) program, that now provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the EAS, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio. Kevin left FEMA in 2008.

Our Goal

The goals of USDPI are threefold:
  1. Inform: USDPI has provided reliable threat and risk reduction information to the public for over 20 years. Our hope is that this information will help empower people to make responsible preparations for reasonable risks, and to not rely solely on the government.
  2. Protect: USDPI has provided unique services and products over the past two decades to help protect people. Some of those have been information services, such as alerting the public to the likelihood of anthrax terrorism attacks as a follow-on to the 9-11 attacks (which unfortunately, proved to be correct). Earlier, USDPI had developed the first "kid-friendly" radiation protection pill (called RadBlock) since kids were most at risk from radioactive iodine in the event of a nuclear power plant disaster or nuclear explosion. At that time, the only available pills were sized for adults and not well suited for use by children. Immediately after the 9-11 attacks, the U.S. government flew a jet to Texas to pick up USDPI's entire inventory of RadBlock pills so that the government could have pills readily available in the stockpile for use by the public (and in particular, children). RadBlock is approved by Health Canada and available at https://kicanada.com .
  3. Encourage: Our hope is that people develop a preparedness lifestyle that seeks to protect our families, neighborhoods, businesses, and nation. We hope to take the fear out of preparedness and replace it with responsible actions to love and care for our family, friends, and all people in times of disaster.
